In 17th century England, coffeehouses were the local hub. On any given morning the cost — a penny — would get you a cup of coffee and admittance. Locals would linger in conversation over “matters of mutual concern” — anything from daily banter and community events to politics and philosophy. Hence was born the Penny University.

We’re going to take a lesson from the Brits and begin gathering together for coffee and conversation. The only requirement is just as much commitment to listening to others perspectives as sharing your own.

Our first discussion will be on Race & Identity Remixed. Our jumping off point will be the NPR article: When “Where are you from?” Takes You Someplace Unexpected
